Thundering exports:China’s auto exports jump 54% to $26 Billion

AutoUpdate 2022-10-01

China's automobile exports doubled year on year to nearly 2.02 million units in 2021 and NEV exports reported a threefold increase year on year by reaching 310,000 units.

The value of China’s auto exports soared 54 percent in the first seven months of 2022 from a year earlier, thanks to a surge in overseas demand for new energy vehicles. China exported ¥175.7 billion ($26 billion) worth of autos from January through July, according to new figures from the General Administration of Customs.

First-half NEV exports surged 1.3 times to 202,000 units, accounting for 16.6 percent of the total, data from the CAAM.

NEV exports reached 49,000 in July, with Tesla China exporting 19,756 NEVs, according to the data released by CPCA.
Tesla's Gigafactory in Shanghai was the first fully foreign-owned auto manufacturer in China, which has become one of Tesla's global centers for exports, with more than 260,000 overseas deliveries in 2021.

Aside from Tesla, multiple Chinese domestic NEV brands including SAIC Group, Dongfeng Automobile Co, BYD and Geely also expanded their oversea market with supportive pro-green government policies.

SAIC Morris Garages (MG): 470,000 units globally in 2021

SAIC Wuling: 146,000 vehicles in 2021

Geely Lynk & Co: 25,167 units in 2021 & H1 2022

NIO: 327 ES8 in the first 4 monthes of 2022 in Norway, around 200 in 2021

Xpeng: 426 units in the first 4 monthes of 2022, 486 units in Europe in 2021

Europe was the main destination for China-made cars in the first half of this year, mainly because of increasing NEV shipments, per the CPCA data. Some 78,000 units were shipped to Belgium and 45,000 to the United Kingdom.

The market penetration rate for NEVs was 21 percent in Europe as of June, according to data from market research agency Marklines. The corresponding figure for the United States rose in recent months to 7.6 percent.

Chinese NEV makers are stepping up the pace of their entry into the European market. BYD recently said it was setting foot in Germany and Sweden, with the first vehicles scheduled for delivery in the fourth quarter. Nio and other electric car brands have revealed similar plans.

China also exported a great number of cars to South America in the first half of the year, 112,000 to Chile, 94,000 to Mexico, and 39,000 to Peru, the CPCA data showed.
